Port summer in Boizenburg is canceled in 2025 – the city is struggling with high debts!

This year there will be no port summer in Boizenburg. The popular series of events, which has taken place every August weekend in recent years, has to be canceled due to the city's strained budget situation. This reports NDR. Mayor Rico Reichelt (Die Linke) made this decision with a heavy heart. In order to cope with the city's financial bottlenecks, a budget freeze was imposed.

The main reason for the cancellation is that the city has to save 3.2 million euros by the end of the year. Although the municipal supervisory authority approved the budget in June, the city leaders were unable to conclude contracts with musicians because the approved budget was not yet available at that time. This meant that around 20,000 euros could be saved through the cancellation.

Difficult financial situation

The financial situation in Boizenburg is tense. How Northern Courier reported, a supplementary budget had to be decided in order to keep the city able to act. Without this step, another budget freeze would have been inevitable, which would have had a massive impact on the city's spending.

Some large school construction projects, such as the primary school center and the “Rudolf Tarnow” regional school, place additional strain on the city’s finances. There are currently additional costs of four million euros for the construction of the primary school center and two million euros for securing the Elbe slope. The political representative Lutz Heinrich (CDU) is therefore calling for more support from the federal and state governments for cities and municipalities in order to overcome these challenges.

Looking into the future

Despite the challenges, the mayor is optimistic. He announced that the port summer would take place again next year. Further possible solutions, such as the introduction of parking fees to generate income, are being discussed. There is hope that such measures will sustainably improve the city's financial position.

However, the financial problems are not limited to Boizenburg alone. According to a survey by the German Association of Cities, 95% of cities in Germany rate their budget situation in the next five years as rather bad or very bad. daily news reports a growing need to make savings, which will have an impact on municipal services such as swimming pools, schools and transport.

The situation in Boizenburg and other cities reflects a comprehensive trend that is also visible in the current discussion about structural changes, such as reforming the debt brake. It remains to be seen whether and how cities will overcome the challenges.
