Hagenow is becoming a model city: Smart City project inspires citizens!
Digital is really happening in Hagenow! On September 19, 2025, the five-year “Smart City Hagenow” model project was concluded at the Schwerin Chamber of Industry and Commerce, which is now making the city a nationwide model for digital transformation. Mayor Thomas Möller and other representatives had their hands full presenting the positive results of the project to the numerous guests, including representatives from other municipalities and digital experts. A highlight of the project, which has already been downloaded around 2,500 times, is the city app HageNOW. This not only offers important information, but also online services and appointment reminders for citizens. A particularly popular feature is the defect report, with which problems such as broken street lights can be reported directly to the city administration. Communication between citizens and the administration is further simplified using a survey tool, which sustainably improves coexistence in the city.
A place for young people
Children and young people are not left out either. An experimental room was set up in the city library to serve as a place for learning and experiencing. This room is intended to help young people understand digital devices and programming. According to Hagenow.de, over 1,500 children and young people have already visited this room in the first half of 2025. In the long term, further development into a real laboratory for local companies is planned in order to delve even deeper into the digital world.
The AI applications developed as part of the project particularly focus on a regional business chatbot, which is currently in the alpha testing phase. This will not only support the local economy, but also promote supra-regional networks. The mayor highlights the sustainable approach and efficiency of the project and is confident that the solutions achieved can be continued even after federal funding ends. The city administration is already holding intensive discussions with neighboring offices about sharing or continuing to use the platform.
Continuing the digital journey
With a holistic strategy, Hagenow aims to become a role model for other municipalities. The high demand and the strong interest in transferring the solutions to other regions show that Hagenow is on the right track. The city's commitment to digital transformation, which contributes to increasing the quality of life for its approximately 12,500 residents, is also highly valued by experts and citizens alike. As mentioned in the Smart City Dialog, the challenges that cities face today - be it due to climate change, scarcity of resources or demographic change - can only be overcome through digital technologies.
“Smart City Hagenow” is more than just a slogan – it is the future project of a city that takes the digital transition seriously. And that's just the beginning!
