On Thursday, August 30, 2025, there was a heated clash at the Ludwigsluster weekly market between participants in an anti-right-wing vigil and supporters of the AfD. The AfD member of the Bundestag, Leif-Erik Holm, was there as part of his summer tour when the vigil took place on the neighboring Alexandrinenplatz. Both events were properly registered, but the participants soon clashed. This is reported by the Northern Courier.
The emotional situation quickly escalated: Gilbert Küchler, head of the Ludwigslust police headquarters, stated that there were acoustic disturbances and verbal arguments. To calm the situation, two patrol car crews were called into action at around 10:20 a.m. The police separated the two groups spatially because they had previously been very close to each other.
Insights into the disputes
The police registered two complaints on site: one for insults, which was moderated by a participant in the vigil, and one for damage to property because a loudspeaker cable at the vigil was cut. Despite the charged atmosphere, a police patrol remained on site until the end of the events around midday without any further incidents occurring.
The vigil against the right fits into a larger context. The Community for Politics and Decency (GAL) Lübeck recently made it clear in a statement that the cooperation of the CDU and FDP with the AfD in the Bundestag is perceived as a historic breach of taboo. This development is an attack on the basic values of democracy and, according to the GAL, could have fatal consequences, including with regard to racism and contempt for democracy. Ronald Thorn, a board member of GAL Lübeck, draws parallels to the Weimar Republic and warns that history could repeat itself. The problem will also be highlighted at two vigils scheduled to take place in Lübeck on January 30 and February 8, 2025, in order to promote an open society.
