Battery trains roll through Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania from 2027!

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there will soon be a fresh wind in rail technology. From the end of 2027, the East German railway company (ODEG) will put a total of 14 battery trains into operation in Westmecklenburg. These new vehicles are not only purely electrical, but also do not require any overhead lines, which gives them high flexibility on currently non -electrified routes. According to n-tv , the new trains should above all on the tracks Rehna-Schwerin-Parchim, Parchim - Hagenow Stadt, Waren (Müritz) - Malchow and Parchim - Plau am See are used.

The first test drives with the new cordless trains took place on July 14, 2025, which marks another step towards environmentally friendly mobility. These vehicles, supplied by the Stadler company, have a range of around 80 kilometers, which is ensured by charging the batteries either on route sections with overhead line or in the maintenance workshop. This means that around 80 percent of all unpecised routes in Germany can be used by these innovative battery trains in the future, such as Deutsche Bahn explained.

environmentally friendly transport adjustments

The modernization of the maintenance work of ODEG in Parchim is also on the agenda. Here the capacities for the maintenance and care of the new battery brovels are tripled, while the total costs for this expansion amount to around 18 million euros. The state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania supports this project with 11 million euros. These investments show how serious it is with the further development of rail transport.

A new transport contract between the country and Odeg provides for a more environmentally friendly train operation. There are currently no purely electrically driven trains in regional transport in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which makes the introduction of these battery trains particularly significant. Deutsche Bahn is also planning to use the first electric trains in the local transport network Warnow II from the end of 2026, which further promises the switch to sustainable mobility. This will get closer to the government goal: by 2040, rail traffic should be climate -neutral, such as Deutsche Bahn emphasized.

an electrical future in bus traffic

But not only the trains take their new environmentally friendly course. The bus fleet of the Ludwiglust-Parchim transport company has also taken the way: around a quarter of the buses are already driving electrically, and all buses are to be switched to electrical drives by 2038. In addition, from April 2026, a new bus connection between Wismar and Kirchdorf will be set up on the island of Poel, which will commute three times a day.

With these measures, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania shows that it is ready for a green wave in local transport. The implementation of battery trains and electric buses could not only improve the air, but also help the country to take a sustainable path into the future. It will be exciting to observe how this change will develop in the coming time.
