100 million euros for the police: investments or election campaign?
Significant investments in the area of internal security are pending in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Interior Minister Christian Pegel and Finance Minister Heiko Geue (both SPD) have announced that they will invest a total of 100 million euros in seven police buildings. These funds come from the federal special fund “Infrastructure and Climate Protection” and are intended to flow to several municipalities in the state. The plan is to renew the police properties in Gadebusch, Ueckermünde, Bad Doberan, Sassnitz, Friedland, Waren and Güstrow. The state government is relying on well-thought-out architecture and modern technology to improve the police's everyday work and reduce operating costs. The new buildings will be equipped with technologies such as photovoltaics and air heat pumps, taking energy efficiency into account. [Nordkurier](https://www.nordkurier.de/regional/mecklenburg-vorpommern/kein-zeichen-politiker-weitsicht-opposition- Nimm-schwesig-und-co-ins-visier-3899728) reports that this is a response to years of neglect of the police infrastructure.
The decision does not come without criticism. Nikolaus Kramer, parliamentary group leader of the AfD, praises the funds made available, but draws attention to the long period in which the police buildings were neglected. He calls for more commitment to improving infrastructure, which he believes is a mandatory task for the state. René Domke from the FDP also gets involved and describes the investments as overdue. Domke sees the debt policy as problematic and demands that new debt should only be used for productive investments, not for mandatory tasks such as the construction of police buildings. The criticism is also aimed at financing, as record debts in the special fund could burden future budgets.
A look at the investments
The new police locations in Gadebusch, Ueckermünde, Bad Doberan, Sassnitz and Friedland will be based on modern standards, while individual new buildings are planned in Waren and Güstrow that must meet specific requirements. Finance Minister Geue emphasized that the funds from the special fund should be used quickly and efficiently to improve the working conditions of the police and to offer citizens a high level of security, according to Interior Minister Pegel.
Nationwide perspective
The developments in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are therefore part of a larger picture, where investments in internal security and police structures repeatedly encounter political and financial tensions. A good hand is required - both at the state and federal level.
