Wismar votes: René Domke confirmed as new deputy mayor!

The political landscape in Wismar has changed once again. René Domke from the FDP was recently elected as the new deputy mayor and senator for construction. The decision was made by the citizens on Thursday evening after a nerve-wracking election process.

An exciting election process

The election was a real thriller. In the third round of voting, Domke only needed a simple majority to prevail against Maik Schröder of the SPD. With 17 votes to 16, the result was extremely close. The election the previous week had not taken place due to interruptions. In the first round of voting, CDU candidate Lars Sperling did not receive a single vote and was therefore eliminated from the race. The support of “Citizens for Wismar” and the AfD ultimately gave Domke the decisive boost.

A promising new beginning

Domke takes over from Michael Berkhahn (CDU), whose term of office will soon come to an end. With a view to the mayoral election in 2026, Domke's election is seen as an important signal that could significantly influence the political direction in Wismar. What is particularly noteworthy is that Domke announced that when he takes office next March 2026, he will give up his state parliament mandate and largely withdraw from party positions in order to fully concentrate on his new tasks.

A life for politics

Born in Wismar in 1972, René Domke brings extensive experience with a degree in finance. He has been working in the financial administration of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since 1994 and has held the role of state chairman of the FDP since 2013. He has also been a member of the state parliament since 2021 and heads the FDP parliamentary group, while he has been active in Wismar's citizenship since 2006. With this political experience behind him, he has the potential to have a positive influence on the city's fortunes.

A look into the future

The President of the Citizenship Sylvia Bartsch (SPD) congratulated Domke on his election victory. It remains to be seen how his term in office will develop and what the challenges ahead will be. It is clear that the citizens of Wismar can hope for a breath of fresh air in the city administration that could boost business in the Hanseatic city.
