Help Friederike: Stem cell donors for Schweriner are urgently wanted!

Schwerin, Deutschland - Every twelve minutes in Germany someone is faced with the troubling diagnosis of blood cancer. So also the 60-year-old Friederike F. from Schwerin, whose life has been turned up since May 2024 when her leukemia has been determined. After a first chemotherapy, Friederike is now faced with a relapse, and it is clear that she needs a stem cell donation to secure survival. Her family and friends have teamed up to get a registration campaign in Schwerin, which takes place next Friday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the "Tisch Coworking & Café" in Wittenburger Strasse 16a.

The call for registration could not be more urgent. Everyone between the ages of 17 and 55 has the chance to become a lifesaver. The need for such donations is particularly accumulated: in 2024 there was a significant increase in relapses among those affected. The organization DKMS is an important partner in this initiative because it provides extensive information and support for potential donors: inside. So everyone can find out about the process of registration and the various methods of stem cell donation.

registration and process

Registration as a stem cell donor: In is simple and uncomplicated. Anyone who registers can help save a person's lives. In order to remove the stem cells, two proven procedures are available: the peripheral stem cell removal and the removal of bone marrow. While the peripheral method is used in about 90 percent of the donations - here the stem cells are obtained from the blood by apheresis - the bone marrow removal, which is carried out under general anesthesia, will be necessary in about 10 percent of cases.

This is how the peripheral stem cell can usually be completed on the same day, whereby donors: often in the inside can often leave the clinic after just a few hours. When removing the bone marrow, a small blood mixture is removed from the pelvic crest, which regenerates within a few weeks. Despite the possibility of wound pain and a short -term hospital stay, the health risk remains low, especially since there is a careful medical preliminary examination before every removal.

commitment in the region

The city of Schwerin is solidarity in this difficult situation. In addition to the registration campaign, schools such as the Goethe-Gymnasium in Ludwigslust and the regional vocational education center in Schwerin must not go unmentioned that the DKMS seal have received. This seal speaks for its commitment in the area of stem cell donations and as role models for other institutions.

The urgency of the situation also became clear when preparing the registration campaign. Family members and friends of Friederike are doing everything possible to mobilize as many people as possible for the campaign. "We hope that many will come between 17 and 55 years so that we can help Friederike and others how to help them," said a relative. Be part of this movement - your registration could mean a new life!
