Traffic chaos in Schwerin: Massive construction sites announce traffic jams!

In the state capital Schwerin, drivers will face some traffic disruptions in the coming weeks. The reason is extensive construction work, which will affect both the road layout and the accessibility of some areas. Accordingly, road users have to prepare for various closures and diversions.

From October 1st, a tower crane will be dismantled at Mayor-Bade-Platz. This work, which will last until October 2nd, means that Alexandrinenstrasse is no longer directly accessible from Obotritenring. For drivers wanting to go in this direction, a diversion will be set up via the Zum Bahnhof road. This will definitely cause some surprises too.

Important modifications and closures

Another project concerns Knaudtstrasse. This has been converted into a one-way street for around three months since September 25th. Only the direction of travel from Werderstrasse towards Obotritenring remains open. Oncoming traffic will be redirected via Wismarsche Straße, Möwenburgstraße and Werderstraße. From November onwards, traffic will be routed over the renovated lane; the one-way rule will remain in place until mid-December.

But that's not all: construction sites are also opening up on the Obotritenring. The sidewalks here are being renovated. This intervention is scheduled to take place between Max-Suhrbier-Straße and Lübecker Straße from March 17th to April 17th, 2025, with one lane being closed. This will be followed by further renovation work, which will affect the sidewalk opposite from April 22nd to May 16th, 2025 and will also affect traffic routing.

Particular attention is also being paid to the construction of a traffic island on Gadebuscher Straße, which is scheduled to begin on March 17, 2025 and is expected to last until April 11, 2025. Here the passage is reduced to three meters in each direction, which can also lead to greater restrictions.

Additional restrictions

Several other construction sites also need to be noted. Barcastraße will be completely closed on March 18th and 19th, 2025, while residents can reach the construction site via Bornhövedstraße. There will also be partial closures in the Ludwigsluster Chaussee/L072 railway area on March 19th for maintenance work and cable work in Ludwigsluster Chaussee on March 19th and 20th.

In order to cope with all these changes, various authorities recommend taking the construction sites into account when planning routes and possibly planning alternative routes. By looking ahead like this, you can safely avoid one or two traffic jams.

The city of Schwerin's initiatives not only entail short-term construction sites, but also show a long-term approach to improving the transport structure. The Chair of Settlement Structure and Transport Planning has set itself the goal of developing sustainable mobility strategies and offering public and private actors support in their decisions in order to ensure accessibility for the future TUM reports.
