Malchin honors Udo Dohms: monument preservationist with heart and history

Today, June 27, 2025, Udo Dohms would have been 83 years old. An occasion to remember a person who left a big mark on the city of Malchin. In his honor, the museum and local history association dedicated a bench with a memorial plaque at the memorial on Basedower Strasse at the entrance to the wall. This small gesture honors Dohms' decades-long commitment to regional history and the preservation of important monuments in his homeland.

Udo Dohms, who died on March 29, 2023 after a long illness, was not only a committed citizen, but also a passionate master painter. Born in Malchin in 1942, he learned his craft from the master painter Otto Schultz. From 1970 to 2001 he was active in various honorary positions in the craft sector, including a time as president of the Neubrandenburg Chamber of Crafts and the East Mecklenburg Chamber of Crafts. But he discovered his true passion in regional history and genealogy research.

A legacy of the Enlightenment

Dohms left an important legacy in the form of a five-volume local family book by Malchin. This work comprises 4,500 pages and a complete family directory with over 52,000 inhabitants, which is not only historically valuable, but has also provided valuable services to the registry office, as Mayor Axel Müller (CDU) reports. Since 2003, Dohms has been an active member of the “Association for Mecklenburg Family and Personal History”, where he assisted like-minded people in genealogical research.

Genealogy research is very popular these days, and many people are using the Internet to explore their roots. The Western Pomerania Family History Working Group supports those interested and offers valuable information on genealogy. It's not just about dry data, but about discovering the stories behind the names in a family tree.

Protect and preserve monuments

Udo Dohms’ commitment to the monuments in Malchin is remarkable. Among other things, he campaigned for the reconstruction of the memorial for those who fell in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 and was actively involved in the creation of a memorial concept. Vernissages with information boards at other monuments are also among his achievements. His tireless efforts were recognized in 2019 when he was awarded the “Letter of Honor from the City of Malchin” for his voluntary work.

His example shows how important it is to preserve cultural heritage and not let the stories of our homeland be forgotten. Whether working in the local history association or documenting family history – Dohms has always shown a good hand for the interests of his fellow human beings.

Today we remember Udo Dohms, his tireless efforts and how his work contributed to Malchin's cultural identity. The bench with the memorial plaque will henceforth be a silent witness to his passion and commitment, and a place to pause and reflect on the past.
