At the Kuhtor” construction project completed: Better paths for Rostock!
An important infrastructure project in Rostock, which is intended to significantly improve the quality of stay and traffic safety, has been successfully completed. After 16 months of construction, the “Beim Kuhtor – Eastern Section” construction project has now been officially completed. On October 28, 2025, Bahnhofstrasse was finally reopened to motorized traffic, which was a welcome relief for many residents. The comprehensive renovation included not only Bahnhofstrasse itself, but also the adjacent sidewalks, the bridge underpass, green spaces and a parking lot.
While areas in need of renovation were previously a nuisance, they now shine in a new light. The roadway has been widened and a sidewalk protected by bollards provides additional pedestrian safety. New staircases and ramps were built, with the connection between Bleicherstrasse and Bahnhofstrasse in particular being made easier by a new ramp system. The revision of the route also ensures that accessibility is guaranteed for everyone.
Extensive modernizations
The modernizations were not just limited to superficial measures. Particular attention was paid to the renewal of the street lighting and the street drainage, which have now been brought up to date with the latest technology. In addition, larger green areas were created and new seating areas were created in the area around Ernst-Barlach-Straße 7 and 7a. The newly planted lime trees and fruit trees, which already complement a historic row of trees, provide an additional green thumb.
A special highlight is the creation of two charging stations, which increase the number of parking spaces from 15 to 17. This is a step towards environmentally friendly mobility that is becoming increasingly important. The renovation of the transport and supply infrastructure also included the renewal of a 33 meter long section of a storm water canal and the drinking water pipe.
Financing and planning
The total costs for this massive measure amount to around 2.5 million euros. Of this, 1.25 million euros were covered by urban development funding, supported by the federal government, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the city of Rostock. The city bears the remaining costs itself. The city relied on the expertise of VEAPLAN Rostock GbR and WASTRA-PLAN Ingenieurgesellschaft, while the structural implementation was carried out by ASA-Bau GmbH.
The symbolic cutting of the ribbon by Dr. Ute Fischer-Gäde on October 28, 2025 marked the official completion of the construction project. The residents are pleased with the successful renovation, which has fundamentally improved the street area, including Grubenstrasse, and thus improved the infrastructural conditions for the future development of the city.
The positive changes in Rostock show that these large-scale projects require a good hand. And one thing is certain: the new Bahnhofstrasse will be popular with both road users and pedestrians.
