Major fire on Güstrower Inselsee: historic sailing home in flames!

In the Güstrower Inselsee, a major fire reduced the boathouse of the “Unity” sports club to rubble in the early morning hours of September 5, 2025. As a precautionary measure, investigators have now ruled out that arson was the cause and have identified a technical defect as the cause. 68 emergency services from several fire departments were on constant duty to extinguish the fire, which was initially reported by emergency call at around 8:45 a.m.

The situation reached catastrophic proportions when the thatched wooden house burned down completely. The worrying details include heavy smoke and embers that kept the emergency services busy until late into the night. The fire was not considered temporarily under control until around 3 a.m. Sunday morning. Nevertheless, the firefighters were alerted again around 8 a.m. to remove the last embers after the fire flared up again. However, thanks to the quick intervention, the club's boats remained undamaged, while some sports equipment was brought to safety in time.

Initial operations and injuries

The dangerous conditions resulted in two fellow firefighters suffering minor first-degree fractures and requiring hospitalization. Fortunately, they were quickly released. There is already speculation about the extent of the damage; the estimated amount is at least 500,000 euros. The association has now launched a fundraising campaign that has already gotten off to a good start and has collected around 50,000 euros.

Mayor Sascha Zimmermann was active during the operation, especially in coordinating the water supply. He recalled how critical the firefighters' quick response and teamwork were in preventing the fire from spreading to surrounding buildings.

Further incidents and current challenges

During the operation at the boathouse, another incident occurred during the night. Patients in an adjacent building had to be brought to safety as four people reportedly suffered minor injuries. It was also noted that an inspection had detected enterococci in the drinking water and results are expected within the next week.

The club's chairman, Christian Köhn, emphasizes the cohesion within the community and emphasizes that everyone wants to do their part for reconstruction. Neighboring clubs have also already offered support by providing training opportunities for the affected athletes.

The fire in the boathouse is a stark reminder of the need for fire protection measures. Like an overview of FeuerTrutz As shown, although there are no comprehensive and uniform fire statistics for Germany, the necessary measures are important in order to avoid such catastrophic incidents in the future. While the Güstrow community focuses on rebuilding, the hope remains that such incidents will not become a habit.
