Röbel celebrates: men's choir turns 170 years old - a musical journey through time!

On Saturday the time had come: the Röbel men's choir celebrated its 170th club birthday with a great ceremony. The city's oldest club was the focus of a lively event that attracted numerous guests to the Bürgergarten. Six choirs from the region, including the Sangesfreunde from Plau, Waren and Mirow, thrilled the audience with a colorful variety of performances. Particularly worth mentioning was the performance of the Mirow Choir, which traveled on a passenger ship to properly support the festive occasion. Local ensembles such as the Heartchor Röbel and the Kantorei also took the opportunity to offer musical congratulations.

The club's chairman Friedrich Karff expressed concern about the decline in young members in the choir. The men's choir currently only has 20 active singers who rehearse under the direction of Claudia Götting. Götting brings a lot of experience in church music and has previously held choir leadership positions in South Baden. To appeal to younger audiences, the choir plans to expand its musical repertoire. Maritime sounds and shanties are currently on the program, while at the same time instrumentalists are being sought to further enrich the sound. To mark the anniversary celebrations, the men's choir also introduced new stickers with a fresh logo to strengthen its identity.

Community through choral singing

The importance of choral singing goes far beyond mere entertainment. According to INTERKULTUR, choirs play an essential role in shaping national identity and preserving cultural heritage. Singing promotes community and creates emotional connections between people. This is also clear in the case of the Röbel men's choir, which preserves traditional songs and at the same time creates space for contemporary works.

Particularly good news came in the run-up to the anniversary: the Röbel men's choir was selected as part of the NDR campaign “Kuna grabs an action” and received 1,000 euros to support its projects. A choir member had already submitted the registration in the summer. In addition, a delegation from the choir will be heard live on NDR radio on December 23, 2024, followed by a short report in Nordmagazin on the same evening. This shows how lively the choir scene is in Röbel and how much singing shapes the local community.

The Mirow Choir has managed to appeal to a younger audience by acquiring 20 young entrepreneurs among its new members. The age range ranges from 20 to 87, which illustrates the diversity and cross-generational approach of the choirs. This development shows that choral singing is more than just a leisure activity; it is a form of community that brings people together despite different backgrounds.

The celebrations for the 170th anniversary of the Röbel men's choir not only honored the long tradition of choral singing in our region, but also set the course for a future-oriented, younger direction. This is certainly a good thing for the next few years, when the melodies will continue to swing through the city.
