New minds and successes: Greifswald's university on the move!

A lot is happening in the university town of Greifswald. Since July 1, 2025, Dr. Rick Tazelaar has joined the Rectorate of the University of Greifswald as a speaker. The native of Rotterdam has an impressive academic career that took him via Utrecht and Amsterdam to Jena, with a doctorate at the University of Munich. His research focus is on the Nazi burden on the Bavarian ministerial administration after 1945. He also gained valuable experience as a lecturer in Leiden and Utrecht and as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Greifswald. Uni Greifswald reports on this new addition.

Also new on the agenda is Dr. Jenny Linek, who has been the university's central equal opportunities officer since June 1, 2025. The historian brings valuable experience from several projects, including the Baltic Sea Escape Project and the InkE Project.

A new wind in university communication and equality work

There was also a breath of fresh air in university communication. With Lisa Kuhlmann, who started working in the area of student marketing and social media on May 1, 2025, students now have a new contact point. Kuhlmann previously worked at the Stralsund University of Applied Sciences.

The university has also elected new faculty representatives for equal opportunities: Dr. Jasmin Hauck from the PHF and Greet Stichel from the RSF will work on these important issues in the future.

New professors provide a breath of fresh air

The appointment of new professors brings a breath of fresh air to the university's courses. Since June 1, 2025, Prof. Dr. Josephine Thomas in the field of machine learning and Prof. Dr. Laura Schmitt, who previously worked at the University of Hamburg and now teaches civil law and labor law. A week later, on July 1st, the university community also welcomed Prof. Dr. Claudia Wrozyna, who devotes herself to paleontology, and Prof. Dr. Martin Siegel, who teaches general economics, health economics and econometrics. The latter came back from a junior professorship at the TU Berlin and received his doctorate in Cologne in 2012.

There are also interesting developments outside the university walls: PD Dr. Denis Gümbel has received a professorship at the University Medical Center Greifswald. In addition, Marcus Hoffmann has been active as Scientific Director of the Alfried Krupp Science College since April 14, 2025, after previously being Deputy Managing Director in the Rectorate.

Commitment and awards

Commitment is very important at the university. Prof. Dr. Sabine Schlacke is now a member of the Advisory Board for Spatial Development of the Federal Ministry and is involved in the NBS Science Forum for the implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy 2030. When it comes to awards, PD Dr. Natascha Kraus-Spieckermann, who was elected President of the German-speaking Association for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (DVSE). Prof. Dr. Henry Völzke even made it into the 1,000 best doctors in the world and was accepted into the Academia Europaea.

When it comes to innovative ideas in the healthcare industry, scientists can rely on the university's support. According to experts Christian Hentschker and Alexander Reder from the Department of Functional Genome Research, there are many options for patent protection and technology transfer. They are available to share their patenting and spin-off experiences with others. Medizin Greifswald knows how important such initiatives are.

The University of Greifswald therefore remains not only a place of learning, but also a center of innovation and commitment. The new leaders and their initiatives bring a breath of fresh air to the university landscape and offer exciting perspectives for the future.
