A look at drowning accidents
This incident also sheds light on a global problem: drowning accidents. According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), drowning accidents are one of the most common causes of death for children and young adults. Although drowning mortality was reduced by 38% between 2000 and 2021, there were over 300,000 drowning cases worldwide in 2021. Low-income and medium-sized countries are particularly affected.
The Wolgast incident shows how important it is to promote preventive measures to prevent drowning. Especially in a country like Germany, where water resources are abundant, education and safety precautions must be taken to prevent such tragic accidents in the future.
