Sternberg commemorates: Fundraising campaign for the 80th anniversary of the end of the war!
A special day in Sternberg: On Wednesday morning, a moving fundraiser for the war graves charity took place at the market. In the context of the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, this initiative is particularly significant. Sergeant Major Michael Hensel has been part of this honorable campaign for two decades and presented himself in uniform with a donation box. He emphasizes the importance of keeping the memory of the victims alive and caring for the graves.
But why is this so important? Around 3.5 percent of the world's population died as a result of World War II, accounting for an estimated 75 million deaths. The consequences of the war can also be felt in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - around 77,000 victims of war and tyranny were buried here. The Volksbund, which is responsible for the maintenance of war cemeteries, goes far beyond caring for the graves. He also supports the search for missing people from the conflict and offers relatives perspectives by conducting research at home and abroad.
A good hand for reconciliation
An important aspect of the work of the Volksbund is the promotion of “reconciliation beyond the graves”. School classes from different countries are invited to look after war graves together. These intercultural encounters provide space for emotional conversations, especially when looking at the graves of young people who were taken from life far too early.
The willingness to donate in the region is remarkable, even despite the current global turbulence. It becomes clear that the people in Sternberg are aware of their responsibility and are actively contributing to supporting the care of war graves. Donations can be made all year round, with a further highlight expected on Memorial Day, November 16th. On this day, a wreath-laying ceremony takes place at the memorial for the victims of war and tyranny, during which donations are collected again to support the valuable work of the Volksbund.
A look back into history
The Second World War left deep wounds that can still be felt today. Every donation collected here in Sternberg not only ensures the care of the graves, but also the commemoration of history. And the Volksbund's initiative clearly shows that it is worth standing up for. At a time when many people are striving for peace and reconciliation, it remains important not only to learn from history, but also to actively work to ensure that such atrocities are not forgotten.
The constant willingness to support the care of war graves and the strong commitment of citizens are not only a sign of gratitude, but also a commitment to responsibility for the future. In Sternberg, as in other parts of Germany and beyond, the memory of the citizens who were sacrificed in the war remains fundamental. Inspired by this campaign, let us engage in the conscious and peaceful care of memories and graves.
