Dispute over Literaturhaus: Hintz accuses Klütz of anti-Semitism!

In Klütz, a small town in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, things are boiling enormously. At the end of October there will be a special meeting of city representatives in which everything will revolve around the head of the literary house, Oliver Hintz, and the consequences of a heated rally with the journalist Michel Friedman. How NDR reports, Hintz is under fire after the protest saw about 500 people take to the streets to show their support for Friedman. The background to the event was the sudden cancellation of his reading in the Literaturhaus due to fears of potential riots from the right. Here you can see how strongly the topic affects people's minds: At the rally, Hintz was loudly criticized and participants accused him of lying.

The dispute also revolves around a yellow banner that was hung at the Literaturhaus. Oliver Hintz alleges that the banner is anti-Semitic. Mayor Jürgen Mevius, who will soon hand over his duties to Guntram Jung of the CDU, was skeptical of Hintz's demand to take down the banner. Mevius apparently came to the conclusion that the citizens could perceive the banner as a symbolic gift in the colors of the city's coat of arms, which hardened the fronts even further. The uncertainty about Hintz's future activity is growing, especially since he expressed doubts about continuing his contract beyond December 31st.

Political dimension

The entire situation is made even more complicated by the political situation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where the AfD is strong. The cancellation of Friedman's reading was seen as a sign that many find problematic. Mevius has since explained that the decision not to let Friedman perform was made due to financial considerations and concerns about violent protests. However, both Hintz and others involved reject this reasoning. They point out that sponsors would have been willing to cover Friedman's fee, which makes the situation seem even more absurd.

The media coverage of the events in Klütz reflects the social tensions. Anti-Semitism Commissioner Felix Klein criticized the cancellation as a violation of fundamental social values. The Culture Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Bettina Martin, was also present at the protest and described the decision as a mistake. Many of the town's citizens express mixed feelings about what has happened; While some regret Mevius' resignation, others believe that anti-Semitic motives led to the cancellation of Friedman's reading.

A look forward

It remains to be seen whether the special meeting of city representatives will bring clarity to the confusing situation. One thing is certain, however: In Klütz, the question of tolerance and diversity is at the top of the agenda, and the discussion about Oliver Hintz's role in the Literaturhaus will not die down any time soon. The public pressure to take a clear position will only increase. What's next? The answer to this could shape the course of the city - both culturally and politically. Klütz, a city in transition, must now set the course and show how it responds to these pressing issues.
