Objections to Müller's election: scandal in the lake district!

There is currently movement in the political landscape in the Mecklenburg Lake District. How NDR reported, there are four objections against the election of Thomas Müller (CDU) as district administrator. Müller, who received around 60 percent of the vote against AfD candidate Enrico Schult in the runoff, is accused of exploiting his position in the volunteer fire department for election purposes. Andreas Rösler, a member of the AfD and district council representative in Burg Stargard, complains that Müller is depicted in a fire brigade uniform on election posters.

The election management proposes that the objections be rejected as they are considered unfounded. Müller is a member of a volunteer fire department and has completed all the necessary qualifications up to squad leader. The other three objections were classified as inadmissible, which is why their rejection does not require any further explanation.

Thomas Müller in new positions

However, Thomas Müller's political career is not only shaped by these objections. Strelitzius reported that Müller was sworn in to the position of 2nd deputy district administrator on September 27, 2023 after his re-election. This appointment is valid for a further seven years. He will also temporarily assume the duties of first deputy until a new first deputy is elected on October 16, 2023.

As an alderman, Müller heads the public order office, the veterinary and food inspection office as well as the in-house rescue service in the Mecklenburg Lake District. In this role, he represents the district administrator if he is prevented from doing so and therefore has comprehensive powers. Finally, the temporary civil service relationship is tied to the electoral period, which ends with the end of the current term of office.

Voting rights in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

In order to take a look at the general voting conditions, it is important to know who is eligible to vote. According to the LAIV MV All Germans and citizens of other EU states aged at least 16 years are entitled to vote, provided they have lived in the electoral area for at least 37 days or have a habitual residence there. However, all Germans and EU citizens who are at least 18 years old and meet the relevant residency requirements are eligible to vote.

In these turbulent political times, it remains to be seen how the situation surrounding the objections against Thomas Müller will develop and what further decisions the district council will make. The political pressure is high, and the coming weeks could be groundbreaking for the political future in the Mecklenburg Lake District.
