Renovation of Bornstrasse in Penzlin: costs explode to 530,000 euros!
Bornstrasse in Penzlin is facing extensive renovation, which is urgently needed. This is located near the “Johann Heinrich Voß” regional school and the old castle and is now being renovated with a total budget of around 530,000 euros. The costs were originally estimated at just under 200,000 euros, which visibly surprised Mayor Sven Flechner. The city council unanimously approved the awarding of the planning and construction services on Tuesday, so construction should not be long in coming.
A central aspect of the renovation is the necessary replacement of the wastewater pipe and the refreshing of the road surface. The entire street measures 650 meters and will also provide additional parking spaces for cars. However, these parking spaces, which are particularly popular in Penzlin due to the existing lack of parking spaces, have to be fully financed by the city because one of the owners of the former Schlecker had to bail out. According to Flechner, it is essential to take these measures promptly, because urban development funding is only available until the end of 2026, which implies a need for rapid action.
Funding and support
The city could potentially cover 60 percent of the renovation costs through grants. This means that the city would have to raise its own contribution of around 170,000 euros to realize the project. Jens Kamin from the Penzliner Land electoral community emphasized the importance of this road for the urban infrastructure. In addition, the city council is seeking a special needs allocation from the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Ministry of the Interior in order to receive additional funds.
At the same time, there was also some good news from Penzlin: two streets, Lindenweg and Steinbergstrasse, were opened after extensive construction work. The Lindenweg was completely redesigned, including the renovation of rain and wastewater drains and the adaptation of the drinking water pipe. This new road, designated as a traffic-calmed area, now has a modern surface made of reddish stones.
However, there are also challenges for residents: the deductible for road construction has increased from the original 13 euros to 20.60 euros per square meter. Despite this increase, Mayor Flechner is trying to find an amicable solution for the residents so that the city treasury does not have to bear this burden alone.
A look into the future
Urban development funding, which also comes into play in Penzlin, plays an important role in strengthening the municipal infrastructure, both economically and socially. The funding focuses on improving the quality of life in cities and communities, which makes projects such as the renovation of Bornstrasse particularly important. The federal, state and local governments share the costs, which shows that the future of cities like Penzlin lies in joint efforts.
The upcoming measures will not only improve transport connections, but also improve the quality of life for citizens. If these projects are successfully implemented, Penzlin could become an even more attractive place for all residents and visitors.
