Bützower Bahnhof: Drunk man threatens travelers with knife!

On Friday night there was an alarming incident at the train station in Bützow, Rostock district. A 38-year-old man threatened several travelers with a knife and made xenophobic comments. According to ndr.de, the victims - three men - were waiting for their turn when the perpetrator, loud and aggressive, approached them and demanded "Feet down!" while presenting a knife. Understandably, the passengers immediately left the platform, but they continued to be verbally attacked.

The police reacted promptly and were able to arrest the uncooperative suspect shortly after the incident. When the police searched his backpack, they found a knife and a breath alcohol test showed a blood alcohol level of 1.85 per mille. The man was immediately investigated as he continued to make xenophobic comments.

Fear of knife attacks in Germany

Unfortunately, the incident in Bützow is not isolated. A look at the latest statistics shows that knife attacks are a serious issue in Germany. According to Statista, many such acts were recorded by the police between 2022 and 2024. Particularly worrying was an attack on May 23, 2025 at Hamburg Central Station, in which 18 people were injured, four of them critically. This was a knife attack on waiting travelers, which could only be stopped with the intervention of passers-by and a police patrol.

This incident in Hamburg involved a 39-year-old German woman, whose motivation has not yet been fully clarified. There is evidence of mental illness, but no evidence of an intoxicated state, which adds to the complexity of the situation. The homicide squad and the public prosecutor's office are also actively involved in the investigation.

Social climate and the role of the authorities

Incidents like these raise fears in society, especially in public places such as train stations. Recent developments raise questions: How safe do people feel while waiting for their train? Police have in the past highlighted the increase in knife attacks and are calling on witnesses of such incidents to come forward.

The Hamburg police have mobilized massive forces in similar incidents in the past to ensure the safety of citizens. During the last incident, around 350 emergency services were deployed, who, together with the rescue service and the fire department's crisis intervention teams, ensured comprehensive protection and quick reactions.

The events in Bützow and Hamburg show that it is time to rethink and strengthen security in public spaces. Citizens not only want quick reactions, but also a long-term solution to reduce such attacks. With all of these developments, we can only hope that the responsible authorities take the knife attacks seriously and take appropriate measures.
