In custody in state security: search for traces in Kröpelin

in Kröpelin, the heart beats for memories and education: On July 2, 2025 at 7:30 p.m., the city invites you to the event "in custody in State Security" in the "Mühle", Schulstraße 10. The occasion is the upcoming 10th day of the Ostrockmuseum Kröpelin, and the speaker Dr. Steffi Brüning, the head of the Documentation and Memorial Rostock , the history of the Ministry of Exam for State Security (MfS) will examine in the Rostock district.

But what happened in these walls? From 1960 to 1989, around 4,900 women and men, often for political reasons, were imprisoned here. The background ranged from "agitation" to "anti -state connection" to "attempted republic flight". It was particularly dramatic that the prison was not visible to outsiders and on average a custody of five to six months with constant interrogations and isolation had to endure.

insights into the dark past

The documentation and memorial itself is located in the Rostock city center and was reopened after several years of renovation work in 2021. It not only serves to document and commemorate, but also as an important place of learning, which deals more intensively with political persecution in the GDR. This is about authoritarian state principles, but also the various forms of resistance within the population, both from official and unofficial actors, especially the SED.

A special highlight of the event is the film screening "Fluchtweg Baltic Sea", a work by Justin Metelmann and Florian Wolf. The film tells the fictional escape story of two young people, and is based on real events of the time. The film's turning cakes are places such as Bad Doberan and Rostock, including the memorial of the former Stasi examination detention center, which impressively underlines the system of repression.

As the story shows, the MFS had established a close -meshed monitoring system in the GDR. The long -time minister Erich Mielke, who employed more than 90,000 full -time and estimated 189,000 unofficial employees during his term from 1957 to 1989, was primarily responsible for this. The methods of monitoring ranged from spying on listening campaigns to intimidation strategies towards system critics.

admission and space reservation

Admission to the event is free, but a space reservation is recommended and can be made at the Kröpelin City Library. This is an excellent opportunity to not only experience history, but also to raise awareness of the importance of freedom and human rights.

The event "in custody in state security" will certainly not only be exciting, but also educational. Be there when history becomes alive and the teachings from the past also accompany us to the future!
