Fatal swimming accident in Lake Dobbertiner: 73-year-old tragically drowns

A tragic incident shook the idyllic Dobbertiner See in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania today. A 73-year-old holidaymaker from Schleswig-Holstein died while swimming. As NDR reports, the man's wife noticed that he was no longer visible from land and immediately called the emergency number.

The rescue operation that followed was extensive. Rescue workers searched for over three hours with a large contingent that not only consisted of the local fire department, but also received support from the fire departments in Goldberg and Mestlin. Rescue divers, a police helicopter and even drones were used. Sadly, the man could only be rescued from the water dead and this happened around 10:45 p.m., as reported by Nachrichten today.

Extensive support

The scale of the rescue operation is remarkable. There were differences of opinion, from the fire department from Dobbertin and other fire departments from the surrounding communities to the divers from the DLRG Zarrentin and medical services. A pastor was on hand to support the deceased's wife, while the police did not suspect foul play.

The incident is part of a worrying development in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Last year, the DLRG counted 29 fatal swimming accidents, which represents an increase of nine cases compared to the previous year. The sad statistics show that more than half of the deaths occurred on the Baltic Sea. Bathers have to ask themselves whether they often underestimate the dangers of swimming. What is particularly worrying is the fact that bathing bans are often ignored, as NDR documents.

A worrying overall picture

The situation is not only worrying locally. A 2023 balance sheet from the DLRG shows that there were a total of 353 drowning deaths in Germany as of September 10th, an increase of 75 cases compared to the previous year. This is the highest number in five years. DLRG President Ute Vogt warned that despite repeated appeals, many people were not careful enough when swimming and underestimated the risks. These unfortunate events should serve as a cautionary tale to be more careful when swimming and to develop a good instinct for your own safety.

The tragic incident at Dobbertiner See is another wake-up call to everyone who visits the refreshing waters in and around Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. We must all work to improve swimming safety to prevent such incidents in the future.
