Future of port expansion: Krummendorf residents fear expropriation!

On October 30, 2025, the Regional Planning Association in Rostock presented the latest developments in the spatial development program. Particular focus was on the planned port expansion, which caused concerned faces among residents and community representatives.

Several information events have been held over the last three weeks to inform citizens about the planned measures. Managing director Michael Fengler pointed out that many of the proposed changes have already been incorporated into the second draft due to broad public participation. Nevertheless, the response this year was lower than at the last debate two years ago. Where is the interest of the citizens?

Concerns from residents

At the last information event in the Rostock town hall, residents from Krummendorf, Nienhagen and Poppendorf expressed their concerns. A worried Krummendorfer spoke of a possible loss in the value of his house and the risk of expropriation. Another resident summed it up: “The harbor is moving right up to my garden fence.” Such statements clearly show how strongly the planned expansion is perceived in the local area.

The new draft of the spatial development program provides for less space for wind turbines, but more industrial space. These are to be built in Poppendorf North in particular. However, the area layouts were also changed in order to protect the Peezer Bach and the surrounding moor areas from development. Citizens and communities now have until December 8th to object to the draft.

A look into the future

The plan stipulates that the spatial development program will be decided next year and will then be binding. It is evident that the concerns of residents must be taken seriously in order not only to have a planning discussion, but also to regain the trust of the population. We can only hope that those responsible can find the right balance between economic growth and the interests of citizens.

A side note: In the debate about growth and development, other topics such as the technical equipment of vehicles are also becoming increasingly relevant. An OBD-II code, such as B1287, shows that vehicle technology problems can quickly arise due to wiring problems or corrosion. Similar to residents' concerns, it is important to react in a timely manner and find solutions.

Overall, the current discussion shows that the path into the future can be rocky if the cooperation between development and residents' interests is not strengthened.
