Shocking verdict in Rostock: Physiotherapist abuses 17 patients!
The Rostock regional court made a shocking verdict on Tuesday. A physiotherapist from Elmenhorst-Lichtenhagen was sentenced to five years in prison for sexually abusing 17 patients. The acts, which took place between March 2020 and March 2025, targeted women aged 15 to 83. The public prosecutor accused the 45-year-old defendant of five counts of rape, eleven sexual assaults and two counts of sexual harassment. Even if the convicted person has already confessed and paid compensation amounting to 115,000 euros to his victims, the court's judgment is not yet legally binding, as ndr.de reports.
How did this shocking case come about? At the beginning of the trial in September, the defendant made a full confession. During the trial, his defense argued for a prison sentence of three to four years, while the prosecution demanded a sentence of four and a half years. But the court saw the enormous suffering caused to the victims as the highest priority in this case.
The victims and the deeds
The list of victims is shockingly long and shows the wide range of women affected. One of the women was even affected twice, which further underlines the desperation and courage of those affected. According to spiegel.de, the defendant acted in a position of trust, which makes the acts particularly reprehensible. Abuse in a medical setting often leaves deeper marks than in other situations. It is therefore all the more important that the judiciary punishes such serious offenses accordingly.
In the region where the defendant comes from, there is now consternation and incomprehension. People wonder how such serious acts could occur over such long periods of time. Coming to terms with such acts is often difficult and time-consuming for the victims, and the fear of stigmatization can prevent many from making the abuse public.
The consequences of the verdict
The verdict sent a signal that is likely to make waves in the region. The case not only has an individual impact on the women affected, but also sheds light on safety in the healthcare sector. Society now expects a comprehensive debate about professional standards and the protection of patients.
However, the court's action is not the end of this story. It remains to be seen whether the defense will appeal the verdict. The hope is that the verdict will stand and shine a light on the need to prevent such offenses. This is the only way for those affected to regain more stability in their trust in the institutions.
In these dark times, the commitment to education and support for victims is even more important. Only together can we ensure that such acts do not happen again.
