December 4, 2025 brings sad news from the Rügen region. On November 18th of this year, a serious traffic accident occurred on the picturesque island, which had fatal consequences. A 76-year-old man from Germany, who was taken to hospital with serious injuries as a result of the accident, died under medical care on December 3rd. This is reported by the Neubrandenburg police headquarters here.
The incident occurred at 6:00 p.m. when the pedestrian was injured in the area of a road. The exact circumstances of the accident are still unclear, the police have started an investigation. The loss of a life not only leaves the survivors sad, but also casts a shadow over road safety on the island of Rügen.
Several accidents and their consequences
This week's sad result is supplemented by another, separate incident on the L 29 between Putbus and Garz. A similar accident occurred here on June 1, 2025, in which a 73-year-old BMW driver from the Osnabrück district and his 75-year-old wife were seriously but not life-threatening injured. The driver lost control of his vehicle while driving for health reasons and veered off the road, where he collided with two trees on the road reports the police.
The two accident victims were taken to the Stralsund Clinic, while the Garz Volunteer Fire Department was on site to rescue the car, which was no longer drivable. The total damage is estimated at around 30,000 euros, and the L29 had to be closed for several hours. An investigation was initiated against the driver for negligent bodily harm.
Focus on road safety
The series of unfortunate incidents in the region once again raises the question of road safety. Especially in confusing situations and when drivers have health restrictions, more awareness and possibly additional traffic instructions are needed to avoid such accidents. It is now up to local authorities to prevent tragic events in the future and make the roads safer.
The death of the 76-year-old and the serious injuries of the other two people involved in the accident are a call to all of us to be careful on the roads. Everyone is responsible for their own safety and the safety of those around them - only together can we reduce the number of traffic accidents and save lives.
