Greifswald's mentoring program: Women conquer science!

Greifswald, Deutschland - The University of Greifswald set a strong sign of the promotion of young scientists on June 12, 2025 with the final event of the mentoring program "Career Way. This program has been supporting women on their way in management positions for 14 years. This year, 25 postdocates and junior professors, 29 doctoral students, 60 graduates and 9 doctors benefit from this unique initiative. In this way, the visibility of female models is to be increased and structural disadvantages in the science system should be countered, as [ndr] (https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/mecklenburg-vorpommern/universitaet-greifswald-foerdert-junge- science ,--mvregiogentswald3462.html).

The program has encouraged over 400 women in recent years and has enjoyed recognition both nationwide and nationwide. The clear support of the state government, which secured a notice of grant over 685,000 euros for the term from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2028, underlines the explosive and necessity of such initiatives. Minister Jacqueline Bernhardt praised the project and emphasized the importance of promoting young women in science on the occasion of the final event, especially in the fight against hostility and antifeminism.

equality in science

But what is behind these measures? The support of structural equality measures in science is the declared goal of many programs that are funded by coaching, workshops and networks. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) initiates numerous promotions, including the professor program, which offers universities incentives, implementing equality measures. Here, universities can apply for up to four positions for female professorships in order to consistently focus on the equality perspective, such as academics.de.

The numbers speak for themselves: While 46% of doctoral students are female, the proportion of 29% drops to the professor. The so-called "Leaky Pipeline" phenomenon makes it clear that many women are lost on the higher floors of the academic career ladder. In order to counteract this, more and more initiatives are being launched to ensure that the proportion of women in every career level corresponds to at least that of the previous ones. The BMBF cascade model is a central component here, whereby the focus is on long -term stability so that more women get in management positions.

diverse programs and initiatives

The BMBF also supports a variety of other programs. Starting with the meta project "Innovative Women in focus", which increases the visibility of women in science, right up to specific projects such as "Scientists in the media", which wants to examine and promote the presence of scientists in the media. By integrating gender aspects into research, it is intended to ensure that these can be incorporated into social issues and thus achieved excellent research results, as is also explained on [bmbf.de] (https://www.bmbf.de/de/forschungssystem/ equality and diversity and diversity and diversity.

This multi -layered funding not only ensures equal opportunities, but also a stronger diversity in science and research, which is of crucial importance for international competitiveness. The path is still long, but with programs such as "career pathemoring" and the numerous national and nationwide initiatives are impressively worked on achieving equality in science.
