Plauer student Sarah Kumari receives a starting scholarship for future dreams!

Things are really busy in Plau am See! On November 6, 2025, 14-year-old Sarah Kumari received a wonderful award in her hometown: she was selected as a Start Foundation scholarship holder. This special initiative supports young people with a migration background who live in Germany. Sarah, who is currently in the tenth grade, was made aware of the foundation by her class teacher and immediately took up the ball.

The Start Foundation not only values academic performance, but also the personality of the applicants. For the selection, it is crucial that the young people are at least in the 9th grade at the beginning of the school year and have already been teaching at a secondary or vocational school in Germany for at least three years. Around 3,000 scholarship holders now form a strong network in Germany, and the Hertie Foundation is behind this great program.

A springboard for the future

With the scholarship, Sarah will receive up to 1,000 euros per year, which she would like to use, among other things, for tutoring in order to further improve her German skills. In addition to German, Sarah already speaks several Indian dialects, Italian, English and has basic knowledge of French. Her interests lie in everyday architecture and finance, and she has a passion for drawing.

But the scholarship doesn't just offer financial support. Scholars take part in a range of events that promote creative and communication skills. Sarah was already able to take part in an introductory event in Waren (Müritz) and received her scholarship certificate at the Neustädtisches Palais in Schwerin. In the future, she plans to take part in a media seminar in Ratzeburg, which offers another opportunity to expand her skills.

The chances are great!

The Start Foundation offers students with a connection to migration a wide range of opportunities for further development. Existing programs address the needs of young people in different intensities and include both free educational offerings and special programs in the areas of programming and career orientation, each lasting one year. Thanks to these offers, the scholarship holders can gradually acquire comprehensive knowledge and fully exploit their potential. Applications can only be submitted online on the foundation's website, and those interested can find all the information they need there.

A big bravo to Sarah Kumari! It shows that commitment and determination pay off. With the support of the Start Foundation, she has laid a good foundation to make her dreams come true. Her story could inspire many other young people to follow their path and open themselves to new possibilities.
