Anglers in MV defend themselves: ban on eel catches threatened vacation pleasure!

Sternberg, Deutschland - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the eel trap is a hotly discussed topic. The State Angler Association (LAV) is vehemently fighting against an expansion of the eel catch ban in the maritime area that has existed since 2023. The association sees the measure as a massive impairment for anglership and demands that the ban will not be extended to inland waters. The problem increases in importance because the LAV represents about 47,500 anglers who feel disadvantaged by the ban. In recent years, the situation has increased again by an increase to fishing clubs and returnees after corona pandemic. Last year alone, the association counted 753 new members, including many children, and interest in fishing continues to grow.

The LAV receives the LAV from Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus, who is expected as a guest for the upcoming state -delegate conference in Sternberg. This conference will not only address the choice of a new presidium, but also discuss nature conservation work and the implementation of the Water Framework Directive. The association representatives are very concerned with improving the continuousness of flowing water, so they actively campaign for renaturation measures and reject a flat -rate ban on fishing after such measures.

eel catch ban and its consequences

why the eel catch ban is questioned at all, it is explained by the fact that the LAV perceives the ban as unfair. According to a message from the LAV, the ban is not sufficiently justified both scientifically and socio -economic. Studies show that the eel population in the coastal waters of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has developed positively. The ICES recruitment index, which served as the basis for the ban, does not take enough climatic changes into account that can affect the stocks. This leads to an imbalance because the leisure fishing is crucial for many jobs and for added value in the region.

The ban on eel catch is also considered contradictory, since professional fishing remains possible, while anglers are punished that adhere to the legal requirements. A fair solution could be a Baglimit of three eels per angler and day in order to protect both the eel stock and to continue to enable fishing.

look at the eel protection measures

The challenges for the eel population should not be underestimated: According to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Nutrition and Home (BMLEH), the stocks are in an alarming state. The intended eel protection measures for the years 2025/2026 include a continuous ban on eel catch in the North Sea wasters from September 1, 2025 to February 28, 2026 as well as a uniform closed season in the Baltic Sea from September 15, 2025 to March 15, 2026. Investments, the causes of which are diverse - from excessive fishing to the deterioration of habitats through human interventions.

In view of the complexity of the situation, which is additionally exacerbated by climate change and habitat loss, the task of the LAV and other organizations is clear: structural measures must be taken here in order to secure the continuousness of the rivers and to promote the stocks sustainably. These challenges will not only be discussed locally, but also at EU level, where the course is set for future fishing measures.

The coming months could be crucial for the fishing in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and it remains to be hoped that a fair and useful compromise will be found, which meets both the needs of the anglers and the conservation plans for the eAL. In this regard, the LAV wants to maintain a constructive dialogue despite the challenging circumstances.
