Six bulldogs kidnapped from animal shelter - police are looking for witnesses!

In the early morning hours of Whit Monday, a shocking incident caused excitement in an animal shelter in village in Mecklenburg. Unknown perpetrators violently penetrated the facility at around 2:30 a.m. and stole a total of six Old English Bulldogs. A mother animal with her three puppies was among the stolen animals. The perpetrators left an estimated damage of around 2000 euros, and thefts in animal shelters are an extremely sensitive topic that increasingly arouses public interest, especially if you look at the background of the illegal animal trade.

On Monday, the bitch and her puppies were discovered in an empty apartment in Warin and immediately handed over to the responsible veterinary office. However, the bitter news does not stop here. There is still no trace of the two remaining dogs, while the bitches affected, who were probably born in May 2023 and 2024, urgently need medical care. They are seriously ill and, due to their state of health, they are no longer suitable for breeding. This sad situation is all the more tragic when you consider that the animals come from Warin at Wismar, where illegal dog breeding was discovered in May 2023.

illegal dog breeding and their consequences

The background of this dog management are closely linked to the problem of illegal animal trade. According to the Deutsche Tierschutzbund , the illegal trade in pets will also remain in 2023 at a worrying high level. In at least 221 cases covered, over 730 animals were affected, with the majority of dogs being. The number of unreported cases is probably much higher, which makes the situation even more depressing.

Often the affected animals are dog puppies that were separated by their mother far too early and grow up under animal welfare conditions. The majority of the smuggled animals come from Eastern European countries, which also makes things complicated. Animal sheds are heavily burdened by this illegal trade - the costs for the care of confiscated animals are on average 25 euros per day, which is an immense challenge for many facilities.

call for help

The Wismar police asked the population for information about the perpetrators and the whereabouts of the kidnapped dogs: "Please register on 03841 203 0 or contact any other police station." The clarification of such offenses is crucial not only to grasp the perpetrators, but also to ensure the safety of the animals and to prevent further attacks.

In view of the current developments and the networked nature of illegal animal trade, the German Animal Welfare Association urgently calls for improvements in the Animal Welfare Act. Legal regulation of online trading with animals and improved identity evidence for sellers would be particularly important. This is the only way to achieve a real rethinking and improvement in living conditions for our animal friends.

The case of the stolen Old English Bulldogs serves as a terrifying example of the problem and reminds us of how important our commitment to animal welfare is. Only together can we ensure that animals such as these dogs in need of protection are offered more hearing and protection.
