Wismar University awards creative concepts for a sustainable future!

Today, July 6, 2025, Wismar University presented the awards for the best creative work from the design faculty. As part of a festive ceremony, Christoph Schild, President of the Association of German Master Builders, presented the certificates to the talented students. Around 700 creative minds submitted their work and the jury, consisting of industry experts, ultimately selected the best seven projects.

The award-winning works cover a broad spectrum and address pressing global challenges such as climate change and threats to democracy. These awards are not only seen as a confirmation of the students' commitment, but also as an excellent start to their future careers as designers or architects. A notable point: last year's winner was recognized as one of the 100 best designers worldwide in the “Student” category.

Special awards and innovative ideas

The best thesis went to Ekaterina Miroshnichenko. Their concept for a retreat hotel and an artists' residence in the former spa hotel Zippendorf in Schwerin is not only artistically appealing, but also shows a high level of creativity and vision. It is exciting to note that most of the award-winning projects are concepts without any direct implementation planned. The university's annual exhibition presents the work of the design, interior design and architecture courses, with the focus on the students' innovative approaches.

But it's not just Wismar University that can come up with creative ideas. As part of the 12th school project “Advanced Business Informatics Course”, groups of students from Wismar, Schwerin, Lübeck and Neubrandenburg developed digital solutions for more sustainability. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Marianne Schmolke, creative ideas were exchanged in a hybrid workshop format - two groups presented their approaches on site, while two others were connected online.

Creative minds and digital solutions

The workshop, designed by Sina Domscheit, taught the participants the basic principles of design thinking and pitching. The event also offered insights into the field of business informatics, and a campus tour was on the program. This project shows how Wismar University not only promotes academic excellence, but also actively supports exchange between schools and the university.

The university also uses Matomo for anonymized web analysis to improve the user experience on its website. The students can therefore decide for themselves whether their interactions should be recorded. These approaches illustrate the university's commitment not only to offering a sound academic education, but also to taking current issues such as data protection and digital innovations seriously.

Overall, today's event reflects the creative energy and commitment that is experienced at Wismar University. The combination of traditional education and modern digital competence sets standards for the future of students and the institution itself.
