Museum Schwerin opens after renovation: monument protection and horror house!
October 30, 2025 will be a memorable day for the city of Schwerin and its residents for several reasons. Today the Schwerin State Museum reopens its doors after an extensive four-year renovation. With a total cost of around 11.5 million euros, of which 7.5 million euros come from the Dorit & Alexander Otto Foundation and around 4 million euros from the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the museum presents itself as a new meeting place in the heart of the state capital.
Director Pirko Zinnow took the opening as an opportunity to warmly invite visitors. “From now on, the museum will not only be a place for exhibitions, but also a place for encounters and cultural exchange,” says Zinnow. Particularly pleasing: Admission to the museum is free for the next four years, which will certainly attract many art-interested citizens.
Politics and monument protection under pressure
However, in the shadow of the museum's opening there are also heated discussions, particularly regarding the planned statue of Lenin. Personalities from politics, science and society have spoken out in an open letter against the proposed monument protection. The State Office for Culture and Monument Preservation would like to protect the statue, but needs the consent of the city council, which is expected to make a decision on this in December. Survivors of the Gulag system and those persecuted in the GDR have been protesting for many years against the monument, which for many is associated with painful memories.
What would today be without some spooky fun? Parallel to the museum opening, the Halloween Horror House in Lankow attracts visitors with more than ten scary rooms. Tonight you can really get scared there from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. The horror house is also open on Friday and Saturday from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. On Sunday the eerie festival ends at 8 p.m.
Completion of roadway renewal
In addition to art and horror, there are also advances in infrastructure. The road renewal between Klein Rogahn and Schwerin-Neumühle will be completed today, but the second construction phase will be postponed indefinitely. The construction costs for both phases amounted to around 358,000 euros, which were financed by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
This eventful day will be rounded off by the upcoming opening of the ice rink at the Old Harbor in Wismar on October 31st. Until February 22, 2026, the railway will be open daily from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., and from 10 a.m. during holidays and weekends. An additional incentive to be active in the cold months!
Overall, it turns out that October 30, 2025 in Schwerin is a day full of art, discussions and leisure activities. From the reopening of the museum to the debate about monument protection to spooky Halloween experiences - the city proves that people live in tune with the times.
