In the Neubrandenburg city center, a dark brown under the trees causes confusion. Aerial photographs show a dark spot at the Friedrich-Engels-Ring, which was titled as "black sheep" among the population. These are at least five bloodbale (Fagus Sylvatica for Purpurea), which are characterized by their purple-red leaves. Two of these magnificent trees stand on the southwestern ring corner, while more can be found at the intersection to Stargarder Straße and at the bus station. Jan Brauns, head of the green area in the city administration, is responsible for around 2000 trees on the wall. He confesses that there is no tree cadastre and the number of trees was only determined by an intern.

One of the oldest bloodbeams standing on Wollweberstraße is estimated to be 120 years old. These trees were planted at the end of the 19th or in the early 20th century when the trees around the city was even rather rare. At that time there was hardly a tree here because the city's defenders wanted to make out their enemies at an early stage. Today the picture has changed fundamentally: on the wall there are mainly oaks, ahorne, chestnuts and ash, with a total of around 15 tree species that contribute to the greening of the city.

The green space office takes care of the control of the trees and carries out them once a year and after strong storms. Over the years, however, there have been only a few felling, in contrast to the 90s, when the trees were thinned out. The bloodbeam seems to be quite healthy, which may be located, among other things, to the proximity to the Lindebach. However, stress factors such as traffic and drought represents the trees, even if the floors are not sealed on the wall.

On the topic of greening the city, it is important to know that there are currently no new plantings of climate -adapted exotic in Neubrandenburg. Instead, the focus is clearly on the preservation of the current state, which is designed as a landscape park. This means that the existing trees and their surroundings continue to play a valuable role in urban life.

The topic of city greening and the importance of trees in urban areas is not only becoming important in Neubrandenburg. A study by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology proves that green areas and tree stocks are crucial for the microclimate and contribute to rainwater infiltration and human well -being. As part of the FuturebiCity project, the researchers found that interviewing felt much more comfortable in places with high tree species. Therefore, it turns out that the well -being of the city dwellers depends directly on the diversity of the tree species.

These findings are particularly important because urban development becomes a permanent challenge in view of increasing temperatures and extreme weather conditions. The Grünelung research project has shown that an increase in the tree population by 30 percent can reduce extreme heat hours by up to 64 percent. The water outflow could also reduce by 58 percent, which would have a positive impact on the city climate.

The trees in our city are therefore more important: they not only offer shadows and a green lung for Neubrandenburg, but also actively contribute to improving the quality of life. A good knack in maintaining and maintaining the green areas is therefore essential to continue to be able to enjoy the numerous advantages that nature offers us.
