Neubrandenburg closes the lido parking lot: bowlers are horrified!

In Neubrandenburg, a controversial parking situation at the lido is causing anger and resentment among residents and bowlers. The city has now blocked off the latter area on the “Am Augustabad” street from all sides with more than three dozen boulders. This was done with the aim of returning the area to its original function as a green space, as the city administration emphasizes. Previously there could be space for up to 20 cars here, and this loss has now led to discontent.

“We weren’t informed about the changes at all!” complains Martin Simdorn, chairman of the Neubrandenburg bowling club. He criticizes the decision not to create a paved parking area for the affected area. The city makes it known that information in this regard is not necessary since it is about protecting a green space. Nevertheless, there are still two parking spaces and other parking spaces in the surrounding area.

New on-call bus service

In order to compensate at least part of the relief for the parking shortage, a new on-call bus service has been in place since the beginning of June. With the “RUFus NB” app, passengers can flexibly select their starting and destination points within the service areas. As neu-sw.de reports, the trips can either be booked in advance or requested immediately. The app continuously informs users about travel time and route and offers the opportunity to give feedback after the journey.

The RUFus shuttles are not only environmentally friendly because they are electrically operated, but also expand the mobility options in the region with flexible connections that lead from the city center to the popular excursion destinations at Tollensesee and Augustabad. In addition, the trips have a moderate surcharge compared to standard transport, although payment is made cashless.

Sustainability in focus

This development is in the context of a broader discussion about sustainable urban development, which is becoming increasingly important. As das-wissen.de states, evidence-based approaches are critical to making urban spaces fit for the future. For example, the use of driverless means of transport is in line with the goal of making urban transport more efficient and reducing CO2 emissions.

Last but not least, the situation in Neubrandenburg shows how important citizen participation and transparent communication are in order to ensure the trust of residents in such projects. Innovative solutions and participatory processes could be the key to finding the balance between the needs of residents, sustainably oriented urban planning and maintaining quality of life.

Whether the city can respond to this remains to be seen. In the meantime, many have no choice but to accept the new parking situation or rely on the new on-call bus service.
