Documentary about Stasi persecution: Memories from Neustrelitz!

A very special film screening is on the program at the Fabrik.Kino in Neustrelitz on November 6th at 7 p.m. Jens Becker's documentary film “As Out of the Blue” sheds light on the fateful lives of young people who were persecuted by the Stasi during the GDR as a result of their political beliefs. This event takes place in cooperation with the “Memorial Site Stasi Prison Töpferstrasse Neustrelitz”, and the accompanying program has a lot to offer.

The film focuses on a school class in Anklam that was targeted by the Stasi as a result of a protest in 1961 after the Berlin Wall was built. The young people find out what it means to be under the strict eye of the state security service: three of them are sent to Neustrelitz in custody, while others are sent to production “on probation”. This shows the devastating effects of the GDR regime on the lives and hopes of young people.

A look into the past

The lives of those affected were permanently destroyed by the state repression of the GDR. For example, Rainer Penzel, one of the young people, was sentenced to five years in prison and released after more than three years. The documentary is not only a look back at the time more than 60 years ago, but also asks current witnesses about their development and how they dealt with the drastic experience of political pressure.

The Berlin Wall, a symbol of a divided city, was built on August 13, 1961 and divided people for more than 28 years. GDR security forces sealed off the sector border in Berlin, which led to a drastic rejection of protests and the loss of freedom. These brutal measures resulted in numerous deaths and a deep rift between the two German states. At least 140 people lost their lives between 1961 and 1989 at the Wall or in connection with the GDR border regime. Each personal fate had far-reaching effects on society, which are also reflected in the upcoming film.

Accompanying program and contemporary witnesses

The accompanying program for the film screening begins at 3 p.m. and offers visitors the opportunity to receive advice from the Stasi records archive in Neubrandenburg. Among other things, it will be discussed how you can view your personal Stasi file. An exhibition in the memorial site will also be open from 3 p.m., giving visitors a deeper insight into the subject of the Stasi and its consequences.

At 5 p.m., those interested can take part in a contemporary witness tour of the memorial site. Director Jens Becker, contemporary witness Franz Ritzschel and Rainer Penzel's widow will be present at the film screening at 7 p.m. to talk to the audience and answer questions.

The interplay of film and contemporary witness interviews promises not only to take a look back at the dark times of the SED dictatorship, but also to shed light on the important and often forgotten stories of those who had to suffer under the repressive regime. Don't miss this moving event.
