Honor for literary talent: Fritz Reuter Prize awarded in Stavenhagen!

On November 7, 2025, the historic Stavenhagen Castle was opened 27th Fritz Reuter Literature Prize awarded. Almost 90 excited guests were present when Lutz Trautmann, the artistic director of the Stavenhagen theater collective, gave a moving acceptance speech. The occasion was not only the award ceremony, but also a special performance by the collective, who took to the stage with an acting performance from the play “Ut de Franzentid”. “We will continue,” emphasized Trautmann, continuing the theater’s commitment to keeping the legacy of the great Low German poet Fritz Reuter alive.

This year's Fritz Reuter Prize went to Berlin author Joachim Rickes for his book “Thomas Mann and Fritz Reuter,” which explores the connections between the two literary greats. In particular, the work deals with Reuter's influences on Mann's work and highlights how his influence has often been overlooked in Thomas Mann research. This important award, worth 3,000 euros, has been awarded annually since 1999 for new literature in Low German or related scientific work.

Special features of the evening

Ute Eisenack from Neuruppin also received special recognition, receiving a special prize and 1,000 euros for her Low German sermons. Their services in 30 churches have left a lasting impression and are helping to preserve the Low German language as a way of life. Eisenack was involved in the “Plattdüütsch in de Kirch” working group and highlighted the strong connection between people and language.

The award ceremony itself was a celebration of cultural preservation, which Mayor Stefan Guzu also emphasized in his speech. He praised the theater collective for its efforts to keep Fritz Reuter's legacy alive in the present and emphasized its contemporary relevance.

The joint appearance of the collective

The performance by the theater collective, which captivated the guests with their lively performance, was a real highlight of the evening. The second part of the play is already in progress and rehearsals will begin in December. With this initiative, the collective shows a good hand at combining tradition and modernity. Northern Courier reports on the enthusiasm generated by both the piece and the award ceremony.

In addition to the literary awards, a new product was launched on the same day that is arousing great interest among lovers of the Fritz Reuter cultural asset: a special Playmobil figure that is available in the Fritz Reuter Literature Museum. This shows how versatile the poet's legacy is transported into today.

The event was a complete success and a sign that literature and theater art is firmly anchored in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania region and remains alive. The combination of tradition and contemporary demands not only attracts the attention of local residents, but also of those interested in culture throughout Germany.
