Rostock traffic accidents are increasing: florists and hall renovations are fighting!

In Rostock, the traffic accident statistics are anything but encouraging. According to the Baltic Sea newspaper Traffic accidents in the Hanseatic city rose by 7% in 2024 compared to the previous year. On average, 14 accidents happen every day, especially at busy intersections like Holbeinplatz. The main cause of these frightening figures is carelessness, as the police and the ADAC confirm.

The situation throughout Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is similar. The daily news reports over 55,000 traffic accidents in 2024, which represents a slight decrease compared to the previous year. However, the number of road deaths rose to an alarming 93, almost twice as many as in 2023. What is particularly tragic is that a third of fatal accidents are related to trees. Here too, carelessness and excessive speed are the main causes.

Florists under pressure

While the traffic statistics are worrying, Rostock florists are struggling with their own challenges. They are facing increasing competition from supermarkets. Flower shops lose sales even at weddings and funerals. Creative solutions are required to stay in business. Florists develop adequate adaptation strategies to counteract the cheaper offers.

Need for renovation in Rostock

The Neptune swimming pool in Rostock is also in great need of renovation. With a further €10 million spent on repairs next year, numerous renovations need to be carried out in a building that dates back to the 1960s and is a listed building. So far, 13 million euros have already been invested in the renovation. The planned measures include replacing the ceiling of the 25-meter hall and renovating the women's showers.

New district and tennis projects

A new Kesselborn district will be created between the town hall and the main train station. This includes, among other things, a four-star Tribe hotel, which is scheduled to open at the end of 2028. The hotel will feature 157 rooms as well as a sauna, restaurant and rooftop bar, which is sure to be a hit in the city.

In addition, the Rostock lawyer Sven Rathjens has plunged into the tennis business. He bought a tennis school in Roggentin to train talented players and also enable his son Connor to pursue his dream of playing professionally. This project should be made successful by employing high-performing tennis trainers and possible financial support from sponsors.

All in all, it shows that Rostock and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are facing many challenges, be it in traffic, in retail or in the sports sector. However, the positive developments in some sectors can provide hope for the future.
