Pumpkin fun: elephants darken the yard for a feast!

What’s new at the Platschow Elephant Farm? Today, November 3rd, 2025, the female African elephants Sandra and Citta caused a very special feeding excitement. The bright XXL pumpkins are not just there to look at; the two pachyderms swallowed a magnificent specimen of the Atlantic Giant weighing 560 kilograms with obvious pleasure. Nordkurier reports that Junior manager Jennifer Kröplin is full of praise because the elephants are real professionals at cracking - their huge tusks are used more successfully when eating the oversized pumpkins.

Not everyone can strike in the same way: the Asian elephants Vana and Susi, on the other hand, have to improvise. Although they are very creative when it comes to feeding, they have to crack their delicious pumpkin portions with their legs because they lack their tusks. Vana has reached the proud age of 66 and therefore holds the title of the oldest female Asian elephant in Germany. Together with Susi, they are the oldest residents of the elephant farm, whose name is a shining example of the joy of life of these animals.

Festive atmosphere and crowd puller

The pumpkin festival at the Elephant Farm was not only a gastronomic highlight, but also a spectacle for visitors. Spectators were able to see live how the elephants ate the pumpkin with great appetite. Guests in costumes enjoyed free entry and created a cheerful, festive atmosphere. The elephant farm team created a great atmosphere with colorful costumes and lovely decorations, which further enhanced the event.

The impressive pumpkin itself was donated by Andreas Kiefel from Reckenzin in Brandenburg and bore the title of the heaviest pumpkin at the current pumpkin festival in Alt Schwerin - true to the motto: “The greatest fun for big pachyderms.” The Platschow Elephant Farm has already made plans for the winter season: the festive activities will start on the first weekend of Advent, November 29th and 30th. On these Advent weekends, the Christmas story is presented in a special way with almost all of the farm's animals.

A place for experiences

Visitors to the elephant farm have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the care of the majestic animals. The farm offers many experiences for adults and children. However, participation in experience sessions is only possible after prior registration. If you want to give something very special as a gift, you can purchase vouchers for personal experience hours with the elephants. These are available by telephone on 0151. 19 42 68 17 or directly at the cash desk. The lessons are ideal for children aged 8 and over when accompanied by an adult.

The Platschow Elephant Farm is a place of diversity where not only elephants live. You will have company from zebras, sea lions, alpacas, goats and many other animals. A trip here highlights the fascination of the animal world and enchants visitors of all ages.
