In the city of Wismar, the citizens recently decided to increase the property tax rates and responded to the citizens' discomfort. A meeting took place on October 30, 2025, in which the Wismar citizens voted with the majority to increase the assessment rates. The assessment rates for property tax A rise from 257 to 366 percent and for property tax B from 541 to 579 percent. However, this increase, which is required by law, causes anything but joy among members of the citizenry, who openly complained about the regulation.
An amendment from the Left was accepted, which limits the new tax rate statute to the end of 2027. Originally it was planned to be valid until the end of 2030, which apparently did not go down well with everyone involved. An additional proposal was also important for the Liberal List - FDP: The new statutes should be checked immediately for new findings on property tax. It was an open secret that the last assessment, which took place under protest in December 2024, was a thorn in the side of most members of the community. Their dissatisfaction with the federal property tax reform and the state government's handling of it was clearly noticeable.

The citizens not only spoke up at the meeting, but also wrote a letter of protest to the state government. The reason? Differences in tax rates and the city's lack of influence on tax planning were clear points of criticism. Unfortunately, this letter went unanswered by the state government. The decision to adopt a new property tax statute was largely driven by the need to avoid losing around 6 million euros in tax revenue under any circumstances.
